Strategic Environmental Assessment

Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is a statutory process which aims to provide high level protection of the environment and to ensure integration of environmental considerations in the preparation and adoption of plans and programmes with a view to promoting sustainable development. During 2008 North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee piloted this process for assessing the environmental impacts of the current shellfish management programme within its district. This was the first time in the UK or Europe wide that the SEA process had been developed for a fisheries management regime, although similar processes are used in America and Australia. This methodology now forms the foundations of the Authority’s fisheries management processes.
